Metals

Metals we buy and sell.

METALS

There are many different grades of metals. Once every day items reach the end of their usable lifespan. It’s time to recycle it. We buy items that are either made from metal or have a large amount of metal in them. We then process them to international specifications, ready for the local foundries or export.

Steel, lead, Aluminium Copper, Zinc, Nickel etc are found in many different products which you come across every day. When we use the term ‘clean’ to descried scrap metal it means free of contaminants and with-in the required specification. The general rule of thumb is the purer the metal the higher the value.

Listed below are some of the products we buy. If you have any questions please contact us on link telephone.

STEEL:

Whiteware:

Steel items with non-metallic contaminants (Plastic, wood, rubber, glass etc) eg Fridges, washing machines, ovens, bicycles etc. Price for these items are assessed on site. If they contain excessive contaminants these items will have no value.

Light Steel / Sub -grade:

Steel thickness less than 3mm. eg Roofing, Car panels, steel furniture etc. We do not accept containers with oil and paints.

Heavy oversize steel / HMS:

Steel greater than 3 mm in thickness. Greater than 1 metre by 1 metre. Eg Machinery, Framing, Pipes etc.

Heavy insize steel / HMS 1:

Steel greater than 3 mm in thickness. Less than 1 metre by 1 metre. Eg: Car parts, valves, steel off cuts etc

Copper:

Copper shiney bright:

Uncoated, clean bare copper wire greater than 1.5mm thick.

Copper 1A

Uncoated, ‘burnt’ clean copper bare wire 1.5 mm thick, punchings, buzzbar

Copper no.2 / Copper mix:

Coated, unalloyed copper wire, pipes, motor windings. Must be free of excessive dirt, grease solder and ash.

BRASS:

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. Taps, valves, ornaments etc Chrome or nickel plated brass is accepted. Must be free of excessive dirt and plastic.

INSULATED COPPER:

Electric wire covered in plastic insulation. The value is determined by the amount of copper recovery in the wire. The less insulation, plugs and fittings the greater the value.

RADIATORS:

Finned automotive radiators of either aluminium, aluminium copper or copper brass. Must be free of steel and plastic

ALUMINIUM

ALUMINIUM CANS:

Used beverage cans free from dirt, rubbish and other contaminate.

ALUMINIUM OLD ROLL:
Scrap aluminium material, generally household scrap. Includes ladders, pots, panelling, roofing, out-door furniture. Should be free from excessive steel and other contaminates.

CAST ALUMINIUM

Aluminium that has been cast into shape. Includes lawnmowers, engine parts, machinery housings etc . Should have less than 1 % steel contamination and be free of excessive oil, dirt and rubbish.

ALUMINIUM EXTRUSION:

Clean Aluminium rod, bar or joinery. Must be free of any attachments including rivets, fittings or any non-metallics.

ALUMINIUM WHEEL RIMS:

Clean aluminium wheels without tyres and must be free of bolts.

STAINLESS STEEL

Clean non-magnetic stainless steel includes benchtops, sinks, sheet off cuts, pipes , nuts and bolts. Must be free of wood, steel and other contaminants.

LEAD

LEAD

Clean Lead including flashings, sinkers, pipes etc

LEAD WHEEL WEIGHTS

Lead wheel weights from wheel rims

LEAD BATTERIES

Lead acid batteries from vehicles, alarms, gate motors.

ELECRIC MOTORS

Electric motors whole or dismantled containing copper windings. Includes alternators, starter motors, washing machine motors. Does not include sealed fridge motors.

UNCLEAN / MIXED METALS

Unclean is a low grade of scrap including Aluminium, copper and stainless that is contaminated with steel or other metals. Includes machines, gear boxes etc Must be free of excessive oil, grease and dirt.

CIRCUIT BOARDS

Circuit boards are green/PCB boards that facilitate the connection of electronic components. They are categorised into low, medium and high grade depending on the amount of copper/gold in the circuit board. Must be free of contaimants.

Frequently Asked Questions

HOW MUCH IS MY SCRAP WORTH?

= Depends on market price, location, time of year and demand. We can give an estimate over the phone but please remember this is an estimate please come in with a sample/scrap so we can see it and give you a more accurate assessment. When you come into the yard we weight the scrap in front of you and explain the different grades.

WILL I GET A FAIR PRICE FOR MY SCRAP?

=Integrity is top priority for us. All scales are computerised and fully calibrated.

WHY DO SCRAP METAL PRICES VARY?

As with all commodity prices change with supply and demand and with the cost of production.

WHY RECYCLE SCRAP METAL?

Because it takes less energy to recycle scrap than mine, purify and shape it.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING TO THE SCRAP YARD?

You will need your I.D. card and we need to record your physical address and telephone number. If you are a company please bring a letterheaded letter stating the following person is allowed to dispose of the scrap on your behalf. Helping to ensure a better quality service.

DO YOU BUY GAS BOTTLES?

No. Where gas bottles are marked with supplier identification please return them to the supplier. If there are no markings the brass nozzle will have to be removed.

DO YOU BUY CARS?

No. If we do take a car it will have to have scrapping papers from the local authority. Cars have lots of general waste inside not to mention hazardous substances like petrol. Do not forget the extra costs incurred in stripping out the ‘scrap/general waste’ and transporting it to the land fill site. For these reasons fill cars are bought at prices less than the scrap value.

WHY DO THE PRICES OF BRASS/STAINLESS/ALUMINIUM SHAVINGS VARY?

Often these shavings are contaminated with steel shavings and waste (Rags, cigarette butts, coolant etc). The price of this unclean shavings is subjective to the buyer. To ensure top price for your shavings please check the material before it is brought to the scrap yard. Run a magnet through it to check for steel shavings…

WHY IS IT DIFFICULT TO GIVE A SPECIFIC TIME FOR BIN COLLECTIONS?

Our truck drivers are given a list of customers to collect from for each day. They can get delayed in traffic, and at premises waiting for their turn to collect the scrap. Some days do not work out as planned. Please phone us if you have any questions to the time of the pick-up. We follow all our trucks on tracker, and are in communication with the drivers, so any questions can be answered quickly. Remember we are a owner managed company so we will make a plan.

WHAT CAN NOT GO INTO A BIN/SKIP?

Food waste, televisions, computer monitors, fridges/freezers, full paint cans, gas canisters, aerosols, tyres, plasterboard. Etc

DO WE SELL MOTOR CAR PARTS?

No.
